Endemic species inside the Campanet Caves

The work of unclogging and opening the mouth of the cavity led to the abundant fossils of Myotragus balearicus, an endemic Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate of the islands of Mallorca and Menorca

These remains appeared as part of a reddish gap of 1.4 m, interspersed between two stalagmite layers

Myotragus balearicus is the most evolved specie in the genus small bovids, which arrived in the Balearic Islands more than 5 million years ago, taking advantage of the desiccation of the Mediterranean basin, which occurred during the Messinian.

The Campaneti Arthropod endemic to Mallorca, discovered and described for Science very recently (2013). It is a cave pseudoscorpion that up until this moment has been collected exclusively in the Campanet Caves
